We drove north to Fairbanks today. It took us 3 1/2 hours because there was road construction for an 8 mile stretch and it took us 1 hour to go thru that part. When we got to Fairbanks it was nice and sunny about 80-85 degrees.

We're staying at the Pioneer Park for 3 nights. It's dry camping in their parking lot for $15 per night. The park is open from 12 - 9pm but it's located along 2 main streets so it's nice here but pretty noisy. This is a historic park with free admission. They got some museums, shops, cabins, nice walking paths, nice playground for the kids, and a salmon bake that we'll try later this week.
The equipment in the back is an old steam operated shovel. This machine has a colorful past. It helped build the Panama Canal, worked in Hawaii and dug sections of the Alaskan "water pipeline".
We'll be spending the next 11 days exploring Fairbanks, then we'll start heading back to the lower 48.
